EMPOWERING the Leaders of Today...DEVELOPING the Leaders of Tomorrow

THE BIG SHIFT...How Managers Become Leaders

The seven seismic shifts of perspective and responsibility to lead a CULTURAL OPERATING SYSTEM

According to Michael Watkins HBR June 2012, all the shifts a function head must make when first becoming an enterprise leader involving new skills and cultivating new mindsets. Click here for a summary of the shifts and what each requires executives (including emerging or high potentials) to do:

A Purpose-Driven Approach

After over 30 years of research and working with leaders in hundreds of organisations, 3CM has teamed up with Integro Leadership Institute to distill the complex role of leadership down to four basic skills (a combination of four two-day and one one-day module}:

  1. Engaging Leadership...by recognising leadership behaviour creates culture - 'Influencing' and increasing emotional intelligence and behavioural adaptability

  2. Mentoring for Performance... by using feedback, coaching and listening through 'Crucial Conversations' and 'Crucial Accountability' skills

  3. Visionary Leadership...by recognising the importance of interpersonal 'Flexibility and Trust' building skill

  4. Building High Performance Teams...by identifying Team Roles and implementing a 'Team Alignment' Process based on Shared Leadership.

It's all about increasing customer loyalty and passion...

What most leadership programs attempt to do is teach these leadership skills in one session, whether that be a keynote speech of 90 minutes or a five day intensive leadership retreat. The reality is each of these leadership skills needs to be applied before they are really learned. The uniqueness of our approach is to focus on developing one leadership skill at a time and requiring leaders to apply that skill in the workplace.

That's why the focus of 3CM Leadership Coaching is on developing leadership capability with the people who run the business through increasing their personal mastery.

The 3CM Approach, its a process not an event...the three cultures of purpose

In order to create momentum during the critical leadership tenure, we recommend talented or emerging leaders to participate on our specialised 3 purpose-coaching programme. It is equally as valuable for leaderss who may have been in the role for a while but have not had an opportunity to build their leadership skills.

The Three Cultural Purposes
What it is... What it does...

The Inner Purpose

“Inner” purpose refers to your self-awareness and self-management: how well you can tune in to your guiding values, or know your strengths and limits – which in turn gives you a realistic sense of self-confidence—and also handle your distressing emotions so you don’t interfere with getting things done, marshal your positive emotions to stay motivated in working toward your goals, and bounce back from setbacks. The best way of achieving self-awareness is by obtaining frank and honest feedback from the internal and external people that you work with

Outcomes: Evidence based diagnostic, such as the 363 for Leaders survey or a Fastrack Leadership Effectiveness Profile with a  debrief and develop a personal action plan based on your level of emotional intelligence competencies.

The People Purpose

“People” purpose is all about how well you attune to people: your empathy, which allows you to understand how people perceive things, how they feel, and what you can do to help them be at their best. People awareness allows you to tune in to others this way provide the basis for skill in competencies like motivating employees, persuasion and influence, negotiation, crucial conversations and conflict resolution, and — increasingly important – high performance teams.

The Business Purpose

“Business” purpose has to do with how well you can sense the large forces that shape your world – whether organisational dynamics, like whose opinion matters most for a decision, the culture and behaviour, the strategic intent, the business processes or economic forces such as how a new technology will impact your market. Business awareness allows you, for example, to formulate a winning strategy that anticipates what’s coming.

Outcomes: Conducting an evidence based 'full picture' survey is critical to success of the organisation, profiling 3 business elements...Strategic Intent | Culture/Behaviour | Business Processes/Systems. These 3 elements explore 19 key drivers of workforce effectiveness and over 100 underlying issues. Developing organisation wide action and improvement is the key, and more importantly keeping the process on track.

The Hidden Coast of Poor Leadership

Poor leadership practices cost companies millions of dollars each year by negatively impacting employee retention, customer satisfaction, and overall employee productivity.

In this highly rated programme you will take a closer look at the effect that leadership has in each of the following areas and what you can do to improve performance through a best practice leadership behaviour.

You’ll learn that:

  • Less-than-optimal leadership practices cost the typical organisation an amount equal to as much as 7% of their total annual sales.
  • At least 9% and possibly as much as 32% of an organisation’s voluntary turnover can be avoided through better leadership skills.
  • Better leadership can generate a 3 to 4% improvement in customer satisfaction scores and a corresponding 1.5% increase in revenue growth.
  • Most organisations are operating with a 5% to 10% productivity drag that better leadership practices could eliminate.

Drawing on proprietary original research, you’ll learn which management techniques generate the best results and also look at some of the common cultural roadblocks that keep companies from implementing them.  You’ll also learn how to overcome these obstacles and make the shift from knowing to doing.

What is Poor Leadership Costing You?

Have you ever stopped to consider what ineffective team captains might be costing you and your team?

Because effective leadership is so important, many in the business world are now quantifying the cost of ineffective leadership. For example, DDI, a leading researcher in the corporate world, has created a Cost of Poor Leadership Calculator. http://www.ddiworld.com/imex/greatleadervalue.asp

According to their calculations, one poor leader costs a company more than $126,000.00 over the course of a year due to low productivity, turnover, and dissension. Ouch!!!

With this in mind, have you ever wondered what poor leadership on behalf of your captains might be costing you during a season?

While we can't easily or exactly put a monetary price on the cost of poor leadership, consider the following questions:

•   How many close games (monthly targets and metrics) have you lost because your leaders didn't maintain your team's focus, confidence, and poise under pressure?

•   How many of your seasons (financial year) have been short-circuited because your leaders failed to establish, influence and inspire the kind of high-level work ethic in daily activities, and mental conditioning necessary for business success?

•   How many conflicts, dysfunctions and morale problems, and major dramas could have been prevented on your team if you had a leader who was willing and able to have those Crucial Conversation or simply alert you to the issues?

•   How many black eyes (Crucial Conversations), or conflict and other embarrassing situations could have been averted if you had a leader step up, speak out, and do the right thing rather than succumb to peer pressure?
