ONE team - Team Development Process

ONE team Development...in flexible modules

We are all aware of the phenomenon of synergy, that a team can accomplish much more than its individual members can by working alone.  In fact, the team is replacing the individual as the primary unit of focus in innovative organisations. With the emphasis on teams has come the realisation that a team takes life of its own, that efforts must be made regularly to nurture and maintain it.

3CM's Four Phases of ONE Team Development Process

The Four Phases ONE Team Development Process Overview

Sensing

Prior to the session, 3CM consultant will conduct that session interviews with each of the team members (including team leader) privately, the limits of confidentiality, and plans for using the interview data in idintifying the issues.

Diagnosis

3CM consultant will analyse the data and information so that a recommendation can be made for a formal pschometric assessment to further diagnose the issues.

Resolving identified issues

The entire team meets in a room that affords privacy and freedom from interruptions. The 3CM consultant will brief and discuss the report findings explaining the analysis and elicit and answer questions for clarification. For the duration of the session, the consultant assists the team members in working through the posted information-reinforcing openess, risk taking, trust and interdependence. The consultant and delegates carefully record all elements and develop an action plan for implementation and follow-through.

Following through

At the scheduled follow-though meeting the team leader and the members review their action plan to determine the deliverables and the success criterias. At this point, a review and evaluation process for any adjustments and improvements.

ONE team...

Effectiveness

Team Effectiveness will help the team members to assess and work on improving their effectiveness in working together as a unit.

Assessing a team's effectiveness consists of gathering information about how the team is presently functioning, analysing that information, and pinpointing problem areas. Once the problems have been identified, they can be worked on.

One critical aspect of team effectiveness has to do with the team members degree of skill and comfort in giving and receiving feedback.

In order to build themselves into an effective team, the members must be able to discuss freely with one another how their team is functioning, how they interact, and what processes they use to fullfill their responsibilities.  Consequently, the activities in this module concentrate on such topics.

ONE team...

Towards... ONE values | ONE purpose | ONE vision

This module will help the team members to clarify the process by which the choose or act, both individually and as a team, and to determine their specific mission or purpose as a unit.

Through these activities the team members can learn what motivates them; this information can be used, in turn, to help clarify how they are inclined to behave in response to the work environment and to situations that arise in team life.

The activities in this module include topics of clarifying and sharing personal values, specifying the purpose of the team, formulating a team mission/vision, identifying team strengths and opportunities, clarifying what the team stands for, and assessing viewpoints towards change.

ONE team...

Problem Solving | Decision Making

Problem solving and decision making are the essence of a work team.  The crux of team development is to remove obstacles to effective problem solving and decision making.

The ability to make effective decisions is an integral part of the problem-solving process:

  • team members must decide and agree on the problem definition,
  • the goals for the solution,
  • the solution itself, and
  • how and by whom and by when the solution will be implemented.

The activities in this module address these concerns.  They concentrate on issues such as assessing problem-solving skills by;

  • isloting common problems;
  • learning processes like brainstorming,
  • the nominal group technique, and

The force field analysis by;

  • using creativity in solving problems;
  • enhancing communications during problem solving;
  • examining and changing the process by which the team makes decisions; and
  • action planning.

ONE team...

Stress Management

In today's organisations, team members are expected to perform accurately, quickly, safely and to act responsibly at all times.  it is no surprise that these expectations can lead to stress.

Periodic pressure can lead to occasional bouts of stress, prolonged pressure, if not relieved, can lead to burnout. Recovery from stress is not easy, it can be extremely difficult and time consuming.

Consequently, the best approach is to guard against levels of stress that are too high and/or go on for too long a period of time.  The activities in this module deal with this issue.

The activities in this module deal with identifying energy resources and depleters, managing energy and time, managing complex tasks, and dealing with role-related stress.

ONE team...

Member Relationships

The relationships that team members share with one another have a direct bearing on the team's effectiveness.  Team members must be able to involve all members in team discussions; listen to one another; freely express their ideas and feelings, including disagreement; be supportive of one another; and expreess commitment to the team.

If poor interpersonal relationships exist - if cliques are found, conflict is mismanaged, defensiveness is demonstrated, members participate unequally, and norms are rigid or counterproductive - the team cannot expect to reach its goals with any kind of consistency.

The activities in this module accomplish a variety of goals connected with building stronger relationships; for example,

  • they illustrate the phenomenon of synergy,
  • help a team to analyse how it operates,
  • examine the issue of team commitment,
  • assist a team in evaluating its norms,
  • help in identyfying and correcting communication difficulties,
  • offer a way to develop a conflict management procedures, and
  • assist in planning action for improving the team climate.

ONE team...

Meetings

Meetings constitute a common trouble spot for teams.  Almost everyone who has ever worked in a team - or in an organisation, for that matter - is familiar with what can go wrong with a meeting.

People feel frustrated when they are "trapped" in an ineffective meeting, hence the loss of engagment and passion is the direct result of their frustration.

The activities in this module deal with ways in which team members can make their meetings more effective.

Learning Strategy

Transference of LearningDeveloping a High Performance Culture

Our courses are highly participative workshops and project forums in the true sense.  You'll have an opportunity to explore issues and practice skills during individual and group activities (Action Learning).  We believe that the most beneficial elements of our workshops are your opportunities to perform the new skills and receive feedback (not only from the facilitator, but from your peers as well).

We use “Action learning”, as a process in which groups of learners collaborate to solve actual workplace problems. In this way, organisations benefit from gaining solutions to critical challenges and participants benefit by learning from their experiences.

We follow a quick pace in our workshops so expect a high-content, high-involvement, high-energy programme.  We'll use checklists, handouts, questionnaires, learning guides, worksheets and workbooks, and samples of templates to provide you with tangible guidance in developing new skills.  Numerous tips and techniques are contained in the course materials and reinforced during exercises.  The focus and efficiency you gain from the workshop will reduce your extra workload.

To summarise – our approach is to do it rather than talk about it.
