Overview - Contract Supervisor Requirements for BHP Iron Ore

Effective 1st January 2011, contractors are required to ensure that all supervisors are trained and assessed in specific Units of Competency, prior to site mobilisation can be commenced.

This coure will enable the Contract Supervisor with the necessary competencies to satisfy the minimum site requirements for working on BHP iron ore sites in Western Australia.  They will therefore, have to be trained and assessed in specific Units of Competency in the critical areas of safety leadership, effective supervision of site operations and on-site implementation of a Safe System of Work. The five competencies have been clustered into 3 options and are covered during the course have been mapped to the internal Operating Discipline Standards developed by BHP Billiton.

Successful completion of each unit must be recognised in the form of a Statement of Attainment issued by a Registered Training Organisation such as 3CM School of Management.

Who will Benefit from this Course

Experienced supervisors or team leaders currently employed or soon to employed on BHP Billiton iron ore sites in Western Australia from contract organisations to other related organisations working on these sites. This course will provide an understanding of OHS legislation and implementing safe systems of work.

Requirements to Receive Certification

Candidates must successfully complete an in-class assessment component during the course in order to be granted a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the completed units of competency. Fees includes cost of Assessment which will occur in-class.

Appointed Person (Section 44) Training: A Certificate of Participation will be issued at the of the course to those who successfully complete in-class assessments.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Candidates can apply for Recognition of Prior Learning if they can demonstrate experience relevant to the individual Units of Competency.

Coaching Support

New supervisors, with no previous experience, can consider the option of individual and/or group coaching (maximum 3) who require additional support to understand OHS legislation and implementing safe systems of work. Coaching Fees are currently $300.00 per hour.

The Construction Training Fund (CTF) provides funding support for training of eligible workers and organisations in the construction industry. We acknowledge the support of the Construction Training Fund in reducing the costs for eligible workers. The funding available for the Contract Supervisors course is subject to eligibility criteria and is estimated at $432.00 for the two (2) day course and $784.00 for the three (3) day course.
