Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety

In a world of growing complexity, the traditional approaches to workplace health and safety are no longer sufficient to run modern organisations.

This qualification reflects the role of individuals who use well-developed skills and a broad knowledge base in a wide variety of contexts. They apply solutions to a defined range of unpredictable problems, and analyse and evaluate information from a variety of sources. They may provide leadership and guidance to others with some limited responsibility for the output of others. This qualification would suit an OHS officer in a full-time dedicated role who works under the supervision of an OHS Coordinator or OHS Manager.

The course consists of six core OHS units plus three elective units, covering the areas of:

  • Laws and fundamentals of managing OHS
  • Managing OHS risks
  • Creating a culture of safety leadership.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply the legislative framework and compliance to managing OHS
  • Identify hazards and assess risks using developed processes and tools
  • Undertake basic accident analysis, investigate incidents for prevention and report incidents of non-compliance
  • Contribute to the implementation of OSH risk controls and monitor and report the effectiveness of risk controls
  • Accurately use a range of measuring devices to contribute to the monitoring of agents and/or conditions in the workplace
  • Implement and monitor the integration of organisation’s OHS policies and procedures in the workplace.
  • Plan and develop integrated participative approaches in implementation process
  • Identify potential emergencies and options for initial response
  • Plan and implement initial response procedures and contribute to post-event activities and procedures
  • Monitor emergency response and address deficiencies.
  • Use creative, flexible approaches to develop concepts and solutions.
  • Evaluate and explore needs and opportunities.
  • Develop a range of creative approaches and refine concepts.
  • Develop concepts to an operational level.
  • Participate in planning the introduction of change and facilitate commitment to change.
  • Manage emerging challenges and opportunities.
  • Implement continuous improvement systems and processes.
  • Monitor, adjust and report performance and consolidate opportunities for further improvement.

There are no entry requirements for this qualification.

Pathways into the qualification

Candidates may enter the qualification through a number of entry points including:

  • Certificate III in OHS or

extensive vocational experience in occupational health and safety roles such as:

  • Healthy and Safety Representative
  • Health and Safety Committe Member
  • Health and Safety Assistant

This breadth of expertise would equate to the competencies required to undertake this qualification.

Requirements to Receive the Qualification

The Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety qualification requires participants to successfully complete 6 occupational health and safety units plus 3 elective units.

By successfully completing the face-to-face workshops and assessment requirements of the Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Programme, or apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Participants can achieve the nationally recognised qualification with either or combination of both approachs.  RPL is a process that enables those who are interested in gaining the qualification to be granted exemption from some or all of the training programmes.
